Pre race: This is a super small race, so you could still register up until the start. Pre registered could pick up their stuff as early as 7 am. Only $20 for the 10k and you received a cotton t-shirt. Was also a 5k option. No bibs, but label stickers to pin on. Race starts near a campground, plenty of parking. Also able to use the campgrounds clean, “real plumbing” restroom facilities.
Race: The race started just after the kids fun run. A few short announcements about the course, very easy breezy feeling to the organization. Go out and have a fun race. Race starts with a ready, set, go and a click on the ipad timer as well as a few hand held stop watches. No chip timing. Course was on a county maintained flat, trail near the Turkey River. Mostly limestone, but few spots of soft dirt/sand material and then some bigger gravel. Mostly shaded. Out and back course allowed lots of encouragement as you passed others. 3 water stops, plus one at the turn around. Plastic cups at water stops. Biggest obstacle was any debris on the trail, maybe some sticks or walnuts. Easy course to run fast. Small hill to the finish, which wasn’t clearly marked, just some people gathered, one with a stop watch. The label sticker bib system was annoying to have ripped off at the finish. However they could just stick your “bib” to the finisher’s board. Bananas and water bottles at the finish.
Post race: No post race official award ceremony, just AG winner photo, where winners were given Subway gift cards. Then everyone just dispersed.
Overall: I love this course! The flat trail, the shade, soft surface made it easy to run fast and keep a good pace. It was small, but still competitive. There were no hassles, just go out and have a fun race. If you are in Iowa and want to push your time on a course, I would sign up for this race, small hidden gem of a race. I would definitely run this race again.
The race is also held as part of the Elkader Sweet Corn Days Festival.

Personal notes: Josh and I are training for the QC marathon. Josh had 17 miles on his schedule, I had 13.1. We just over 5 miles before the race, ran the 10k, and then finished out the 5.7 miles after the race. I was also running a virtual 5k, the hot buns run, and the Happy 10k virtual race.
