Ugly Sweater and Tie Run, Modern Woodman Park Davenport, IA, December 7, 2013. 1 pm, Sunny 5 degrees.
Packet Pick up / Registration: Easy registration available online or before the race on race day. Packet pick up day before at the ball park or just before the race. With registration you received a bib number, elf or Santa hat and a Road ID coupon.
Due to the cold participants were encouraged to wait inside the ball park suites level to stay warm
Race: Few short announcements made and the “go” was shouted through a bull horn. Course was a flat, out and back along the Mississippi River, on an asphalt paved bike path. Miles were not marked. One water stop, with bottles at the turn around. All busy intersections along the path had a volunteer or law enforcement officer. Finish was marked with a sign, no clock or officials taking bib numbers.
Post race: hot cider, hot chocolate and cookies available to finishers in the suites level of the ball park. Contest held for the ugliest sweater and the ugliest tie.
Overall: This is a “for fun” race, so if you like to race for fun it’s perfect. I would do it again as I had fun.
Personal: I would call myself an experienced racer, I was a bit disappointed the course was short as I was on pace to set another PR for the year. I sometimes have problems with “for fun” races in that there are no awards, etc. I did have fun trying to keep up with my friend Joel (and his bright red legs, he wore shorts) It was also a part of my training for Dopey.
