Walt Disney World Family 5k

January 9, 2014 6:15 am. comfortable 60 ish degrees, humid

Parking / Transportation: Free parking available at Epcot in lot near start. Alarm set for 3 am to get a decent spot. If you were staying on Disney property a shuttle bus was available.

Participants were encouraged to gather near the corrals, concessions available, DJ & dance party happening. 30-45 minutes prior to start time we could get to our corrals. Many port-a-potties, coolers with water.

Approx 10,000 runners.

Start: Corral start, lettered A through E. Assigned bibs based on submitted times. We were in corral B. Could start in your assigned corral or a lower letter. After the National Anthem the first corral was off, on time, with a fireworks salute.  The next corral started a few minutes later and so on, each with fireworks.

The course started on the roads to Epcot. We passed by a bug from “It’s a Bugs Life” then entered Epcot near Norway, revealing the park all lit up. This is also where we spotted Daisy. Dopey was near the Dwarfs Village. (We waited about 20 minutes in line to get his photo) Also used a bathroom in the park. There was one last stop with Ratatouille, but we skipped that one. We departed Epcot at France, completing the World Showcase section of the race.

We ran through a back lot and then the run finished up with a jaunt around Spaceship Earth.

The course was crowded, it narrowed and widened without warning in some places. Water only stops on this course, in paper cups. Pavement was wet due to a developing drizzle, some spots could have been slippery. Lots of volunteers, most were cheering. Not many spectators.

No official times, unless you were doing the Dopey Challenge. Also no official sweep of this race, very family friendly.

Finish clearly marked with a banner and clock. Medals placed around your neck. Table for water and Powerade. Dopey participants were directed one way, kind of a clustered mess. Received first wrist band. Proceeded to get finishers photo, then on to post race snack box. (banana, corn chips, processed cheese dip, rice cake snack, skittles, Clif bar and Craisins)

Characters available for post race photos. We forgot about this, and skipped them for this race.

Overall: Flat course, crowded, laid back. This is a perfect race for running with the family. Not a race to set a PR or actually race.

Personal: Josh and I ran together. We had 3 more races to go, so we took our time and kept an eye out for a possible sweeper. We had fun taking photos dressed as Mouseketeers.
