I’m not going to lie, I have struggled with writing this review. What can you say about something that is delicious, besides that it’s delicious, awesome, tasty, healthy, fantastic, wonderful, the best, nutty, etc However I will do my best to tell you about my Justin’s nut butter experience.
I was no stranger to this product, as I had tried the 1.15 oz squeeze pack before, in my quest to find a healthier option than peanut butter. I was excited when the box arrived at my door step with 3 different flavors. Almond Butter, Maple Almond Butter and Chocolate Hazelnut Butter.
The Justin’s website is full of great information, I don’t need to repost everything, check it out here. Some of the basic points behind Justin’s:
- Created by Justin, who was looking for something better than peanut butter
- Domestically sourced
- Organic Ingredients
- Gluten Free products
- Gives back to charity
- Wind powered facility
- sold in 1.15 oz squeeze packs or 16 oz recyclable jars
- also make peanut butter cups
- 8 different nut butters
Ok so how does this relate to running? It’s a great source of protein. I love to top most everything with it. I have had english muffins, apples, celery and even bananas with Justin’s. It’s so great, I have eaten a packet of it on it’s own. It’s also great to bake with, the website has a great selection of recipes.
I also took a packet of the chocolate hazelnut butter on a 10 mile run. I usually don’t need much “fuel” for this distance, but I thought what better way to try a product than on a training run. It was a little cooler outside, so the packet needed to be kneaded to keep it soft. As a non gel person, I really like this alternative. It didn’t bother my stomach, and it was like eating candy. However there was no way I was going to consume the entire package. If I could get a smaller pack, with a spout just for running that would be perfect!
Are you sold? Well you can check this page to pick up your own Justin’s in your area. I do know in the Iowa City area you can find it at the New Pioneer Co-op and at Wal-mart. The squeeze packs are around $1.40 and I believe a jar is around $5.00. Yes this is pricier than peanut butter, but it’s worth it!
As a bonus, I also was able to try a jar of Chocolate Almond Butter, through someone else on twitter. It was just as wonderful, and I think it lasted a week or 2. I am going to make a goal to try all the flavors and find the peanut butter cups.
