Here in the midwest, it’s BUFF® head wear season. I have many of these from a baseball style hat, infinity scarf, visor, and hood. I was ready to expand my wardrobe with the new bright and reflective BUFF® DryFlx neck warmer and hat.
I came home to a package with the yellow fluor color BUFF® DryFlx neck warmer and headband. The package also had a catalog, I was briefly distracted by all the stocking hats and knit neck warmers.
I was ready to rock it out. I really appreciated the bright color, and when I took a photo I liked it even more as the reflective detail appeared.
As you can see this is bright and reflective (reflective 360), but there’s so much more:
4 Way Stretch
UPF Sun Protection
High Moisture Management
Where I run, all these factors are important. First, because it’s winter, it’s cold. I choose to run outdoors, and I layer up. I need to protect my skin, face, ears, etc. The stretch in the fabric allows me to layer up, including hiding my headphones underneath.
Also because it’s cold, moisture management is very important. There is nothing worse than your gear getting wet and being exposed to the elements. You might as not be wearing anything then. In the times I have run with this, and breathing through it, I don’t feel the cold due to the moisture in that area…if that makes sense.
The UPF 50 and reflectivity are a no brainer. No matter how obnoxious you look, cars still never see you. And all added sun protection is a bonus.
I don’t feel I have to explain the 100% seamless, but to some this may just seem like a fabric tube. In addition to the above qualities, having no seams makes for a comfortable fit.
I am happy to have this BUFF® collection join my wardrobe. While there are imitations, there is nothing like the original!

Safety on the run is something at the forefront these days. I recently wrote a post about runners safety due to an unfortunate local situation. This prompted me to purchase the Sabre pepper spray after a recommendation from the University Police. When the opportunity came to test the gel, I was intrigued.
I opened the personal alarm first, after some work to get the battery in place. I gave it a test – the light lit up green. While a little apprehensive, I also tested the alarm. It was shrill and the light flashed red. I clipped it to my belt and went for a run. It never accidentally got bumped, nor did it feel like I was wearing it.
I next opened both the spray and the gel. I was really interested in taking the gel with me, but it came with an arm band. I am not too excited about running with anything on my arm, plus seems like it would be more difficult to access. I switched the the containers. I had the gel in the hand held elastic holster, however the container was taller than the spray container.
I make the observations as to the ergo-dynamic fit into my hand. I am not sure the taller can works as well as the designed spray size. I did take it for a spin. The way the strap is designed to carry the spray works perfectly in the palm of my hand. My grip naturally fits around it, with or without a clenched fist. It didn’t feel like anything extra.
I then decided it was time to actually test the gel. The whole idea is that I will never have to use this product, however if I do, I want to make sure it works and I know how to.
“Pepper gel virtually eliminates wind blowback and only affects what it directly contacts.”
I took to the snowy trail for this task. The trigger on the container is locked, but a swivel and it becomes unlocked. I unlocked the trigger and pushed down with my thumb…nothing…I then put the opposite pointer finger and pushed really hard – an orange liquid spit out and in a direct squirt. Hmmm, it shouldn’t be that difficult.
I was baffled, and then I thought, maybe the temperature has something to do with the gel, it was a feels like 10 degrees. I tried a few more times…ending with a situation on my glove. I was happy to be wearing gloves and happy I could easily clean it off in a snow bank.
“Pepper sprays deliver a concentrated burst of capsaicin, the chemical found in peppers that give them their heat. When it comes in contact with mucous membranes — including the eyes, nose or throat — it triggers a strong inflammatory response. Along with intense pain, the target’s eyes may swell shut and he or she may have difficulty breathing. The combined effects can incapacitate a person for at least a few moments, potentially up to several minutes , giving you the time, you need to get to safety.” – sabrered.com
I also thought that maybe due to the taller canister, it just wasn’t fitting the right spot on my thumb for it to spray. I want to be prepared, this took too much time. Or, perhaps I am a weakling and I am not strong enough to push it? I will have to wait for a warmer day to test it again.
I was looking through the FAQ on the website and it says it has been temperature tested and not to store below 32 degrees.
Beyond this issue, I will continue to carry a Sabre Safety product with me on my runs. From the simple press of an alarm button, to a handheld gel or spray, Sabre makes safety easy.
“Disclaimer: I received Now Foods BCAA as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find, and write race reviews!”
BCAA or Branched Chain Amino Acids, what are they? Well I really didn’t know, so what better time to find out and give them a try.
I received two canisters of the watermelon flavor, two canisters of the grape flavor and a shaker bottle.
Here is the information provided online:

How did I use these?
First I read the directions and just needed to try it. I sampled the watermelon flavor first. I put one scoop to 14-16 oz of water, then I just shook it in a water bottle. The taste was good.
I went for a run and when I returned planned to drink it all. It’s recommended for before, during or after exercise. When I came back from my run, I drank as much as I could.
I then got creative and decided an easy way to consume during a run would be to eat it, so I made gummy bears! While they were fun to make, I am not sure I choose the best recipe, they were quite rubbery. Recipe – https://reflexsupplements.com/simple-homemade-bcaa-gummies/
I then tried the grape flavor, just shake with water. I preferred this flavor to the watermelon. They were both very pretty in color.
I then thought I would experiment with sour gummy bears, so I found a different recipe with less gelatin, and they turned out a lot better, but I think I added too much citric acid -which made them sour. Recipe – https://steelfitusa.com/2017/10/simple-bcaa-gummies/
To follow up, I was working consuming a drink a day for recovery purposes. I had just run the Des Moines Marathon on a Sunday, and on the next Saturday I was running the Hawkeye Fallout 50k. Final thoughts:
While I think the product tastes great, my biggest challenge was consuming so much liquid. I do not drink a lot of water on a normal day, I really try to hydrate before a big race. So, for me it was hard to add this much liquid to my day. Perhaps, I am just not as focused as I should be with nutrition.
However NOW Foods was a great product to learn and try something I wasn’t familiar with. It’s a clean, highly-tested brand. They conduct more than 16,000 tests each month for identity, purity, strength and composition to ensure that what’s on the label is in the bottle. AND, now they’re third-party certified via Informed-Sport for added product purity assurance. The Informed-Sport program certifies that their products have been tested for more than 200 banned substances by their world-class sports anti-doping lab.
This time I received a tub of the watermelon Endurance drink formula, vanilla and apple pear gels, lemon lime Endurance drink formula packets, and orange and fruit punch energy chews.
*Also before this shipment, I ordered a tub of the orange Endurance drink formula, for whatever reason it is priced less than the others. I had drank all my previous watermelon flavor for all my summer long runs and races. I love that flavor!!! You can read more about that here – bottom line the extra sodium in this drink is what works for me.
I am a bit different, but I did not pick a training plan for my marathon. However, I knew when I need to log long runs and when to scale back.
I ran the PCTR 30k as part of training for the Des Moines Marathon. It was a HOT day!!! There was no shade on the course. I made sure to fill my hydration pack with watermelon Gatorade Endurance. I had a football game to attend to that night, I couldn’t afford the dehydration headache.
I then tested the chews on a longer run through Iowa City, I believe it was near 15-16 miles. I would rather eat candy, gummies and real food when I run. I was pleasantly surprised with the Gatorade chews. I brought the orange with me, it was flavorful and it didn’t stick in my teeth. The only issue I had was getting the package open.
My last long run, it was once again a billion degrees and humid. I filled my hydration pack with watermelon Endurance formula, I filled my pockets with the apple pear gels and the fruit punch chews. This run confirmed that I am not a gel person, while this flavor tasted really good, I just can’t ingest this on a run, the texture just turns me off. Luckily I had some fruit punch chews with me, they are my favorite yet, and I need to order some more!!!!
How did this prepare me for Des Moines? I knew what to take with me to the race. I was actually shocked to learn that the Gatorade Endurance drink was the only Gatorade product on the course, as the gels provided were by another brand. This told me to bring some chews with me.
On race day I did not have a plan, I just kept moving. (You can read my full race recap here.) I drank the Gatorade Endurance ( believe it was lemon lime) when I wanted and I alternated eating 2 chews at a time, washing down with water. I did stop for bacon, ate a Twizzler and a Jolly Rancher too. However, going in prepared with a fueling plan might have helped me set a new marathon PR!!!
This weekend I am registered to run a 50k, you better believe my pack will be filled with watermelon Gatorade Endurance. Sadly, I ate all my chews and have not ordered more.
In my previous review I raved about the increased sodium and potassium, this is what works for me. These products do not taste too sweet for me too. Nothing worse than feeling like you need to brush your teeth when you are done racing.
Make sure to keep up with the latest Gatorade Endurance news on their website, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
I don’t want to hear it…. but YES I need more sunglasses in my life! I couldn’t resist this opportunity when I saw the black frames with yellow polarized lenses.
You see, it’s football season, which brings tailgating season. While eye safety on the run is something I have blogged about in the past, and I rarely if ever leave the house without sunglasses….sometimes fashion is also important. This season, I will be GAME DAY READY!!
The Premiums are a “modern take on a classic design.” They offer poloarized lenses with UV400 Protection. Many styles and colors to choose from. They come with a soft pouch that doubles as a lens cleaner.
I have mostly been wearing the black and gold ones, I really like the mirrored lens. I have been trying them on the run too. While these work for running and fit with my hat and headphones, I will probably use them on shorter runs. I am a girl that prefers a frame with adjustable nose pads for running. Don’t get me wrong they work for running, and have minimal or no bounce, PLUS you look cool!.
The one thing that really has me interested is the price! You can drop a lot of money on shades, these top out around $25. They do not feel like low quality – they are much better than those promotional shades you may pick up at an expo. Plus no matter what sports team you cheer for, there is a color combo for you!
“Disclaimer: I received a Karma Ring Duo as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!”
Way back when, I lost a lot of weight, and one evening I was doing some yard work and lost my wedding ring. I was creating a new flower planter around our mailbox, my wedding ring could have been anywhere. I was in a panic! With a flashlight, I finally found my ring… it was too big for my ring finger and that is why it fell off. From that point on I have been wearing my wedding set on my middle finger. (I know I can get it resized, but when they fused the bands together, it turned into a mess.)
Enter Karma Ring, I thought this could be a great option for me to have a ring back on my ring finger.
First, I needed to decide what size my ring finger is. I went to the Karma Ring website and printed the ring sizing tool. This was not working for me, it wouldn’t print in the size that was suggested. I tried on 2 computers and still couldn’t get it to work. I then did what anyone would do, google. I tried to compare my current ring with a size chart. This lead me to ordering a man’s ring set as the women’s set only goes to a size 8.
I received the men’s set and of course it was too big. So, I went and tried to print the ring sizer again, with no luck. So, I measured my finger with a ruler which had me in a woman’s size 8, and I was sent a replacement. *Thank you!
As a Bibrave Pro we are testing the “Duo.” It is a ring that comes with 2 parts. There is a base part and then 3 colors, to which you can change. The company also makes just simple one piece bands too.
Currently there is one color option for men in the Duo series. Black with darker colored bands. Then for women you can choose from 2 options; a white band with pastel colors, or a brown band with lighter colors. As you can see, I went with the white band. I am looking forward to more color options in the future, hopefully something bright or even darker for women.
The concept behind the colors and changing them is that once you reach a goal, you would change the color, similar to martial arts. For me… I don’t want to mess with things, so I have worn the peachy/pink color since I received it.
Also you don’t have to be married or engaged to have a Karma Ring. Wearing a ring can simply be a fashions statement or a symbolic statement.
The ring arrived in a cool tin, with allows you to keep the bands you are not wearing all in one spot. The rings are very light weight and “bendy.” The inside is printed with the brand name and size.
I have been wearing this ring for at least 2 weeks now. It’s to the point I don’t even know it’s there. I was worried with the work I do and the white band, it would get dirty. In fact, I was cleaning and sorting for a sale and keeping an eye on it. It’s still bright white. I also had concerns about gunk getting caught in between the bands, but they lock together and don’t allow for outside debris.
In fact, these are the specifications:
Karma rings feature patent-pending, ergonomic contouring, and strong yet flexible materials, so that they feel as heavenly as they look.
Hypoallergenic – Even sensitive skin will love the specially formulated silicone used in every Karma Ring.
Non Porous – Doesn’t absorb germs, odors, and chemicals.
Ultra Durable – Wears like iron feels like silk
Non Conductive/Non Magnetic – Will not affect hand held mobile devices, Bluetooth technology, or magnetic strips on credit cards.
If you are looking for a silicone band for an active lifestyle, check out Karma Ring. Before you use code BIBRAVE to save 33% the Duo costs $24.99.
Nugo Nutrition is at it again, they have added a new bar to their lineup. The egg white protein bar.
We start with the highest quality fruits and nuts, then add in non-GMO egg white protein, a complete protein. This whole food paleo bar has 12-14 grams of protein and is certifiedgluten free and OU Kosher Pareve
A while back I had the chance to try the Nugo dark chocolate bars, so I was ready to give the egg white protein bars a try. A mixed box of 4 flavors – maple pecan, blueberry, dark chocolate sea salt and peanut butter arrived at my house.
The first thing I noticed was the scent coming from them, especially the blueberry, They all smelled really good.
In addition to smelling great these bars are packed with protein, and not just any protein “a complete protein, containing all the amino acids your body needs, while being fat & cholesterol free.” They are also gluten free and contain real food ingredients.
With all these benefits for my health it was time to give them a try. Due to the fragrant smell I opted for the blueberry first. The texture was something I had to get passed first. However, compared to most protein bars, this isn’t anything new or different.
Then over time I tested all the flavors, and while I can say the texture is still something that is not for me, I will say the maple pecan is my favorite. It’s like eating pancakes, maybe it’s because I liked to grab a bar before a run in the morning.
The bars are easier to eat if they are cooler, when they warm up they become more “flexible” and more chewy. I think they would be best kept in a refrigerator.
I can also say the protein does it’s job, I had a bar in my bag and couldn’t wait to for lunch, a few bites of a bar and my hunger pangs subsided.
That’s right, these are easy to pack and take with you anywhere. In fact if you want to give them a try use code *BIBRAVE* for 15% off NuGo Egg White Protein Bars until August 3, 2018! https://www.nugonutrition.com/
