Nuun Hydration

I guess I will just start by saying, I am not a fan of Nuun. Honesty is the best policy right?

Ok so when I first started logging miles like crazy, about 2 years ago when I ran my first full marathon in Oct 2012. I remember training with blue Powerade as that is what was on the course. Even though at mile 24 the glass of blue Powerade was the most delicious thing I had ever tasted, I didn’t care to ever drink it again.

It led me on a search to find something else to stay hydrated on the run. I really like Gatorade’s G2, it’s light in calories, has a good flavor, I can buy it at my local store and it works for me. However it gets to be the same old thing.  I had heard about Nuun through twitter, everyone raved about how it was their favorite and I thought I would give it a try. It’s a tablet that dissolves in 16 oz of water, as an alternative to hydration.

There are so many positives about Nuun:

  • a blend of electrolytes, Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium & Calcium
  • has 17 vitamins and minerals
  • hydrates all day
  • just add to water, small quarter sized tablets
  • low in calories, under 8 per tab
  • Product partner with Susan G. Komen & Team in Training
  • first company to separate electrolyte replacement from carbohydrates

I went online to purchase a flavor, however at the time I could not purchase a sample flavor, I had to buy a tube. Well I go all out. I purchased not one flavor, but 2 mixed 4 packs. A total of 8 different flavors. I had to find one I liked. Each tube contains 10 tabs, I had 80 drinks on their way to me.

Since this was a while ago, I do not remember which flavors in particular I received. Today you can purchase 3 types: All Day hydration, U Natural Hydration and Nuun Active Hydration.

When the product arrived, I did immediately measure out 16 oz of water, plunked the tab into my glass and watched it dissolve, like Alka Seltzer. I remember not being too excited, but I was going to give it a try, I had purchased a lot of product. My next long run I mixed up another flavor and took it along in my fuel belt. Whoa…the fizz which settles after the tablet dissolves is still present under pressure, the first sips out of the bottle were a surprise, but not too bubbly.  I was still not loving the flavor.

The next thing I tried was taking it to work to stay hydrated, I never drink enough water, I hate the sloshy belly feeling.  So I mixed up a new flavor in my water bottle, but left the cap to the side after the tablet dissolved, just not to have the pressure build up.  Again I just didn’t love the taste.

It’s not that it tastes bad, it just doesn’t do it for me. I really wanted to like it, I really tried. I even thought lemon-lime was the way to go as it tasted kinda like water with lemon. I think I was hoping that it stayed fizzy when you drank it, but it was just flat and not chalky..but just not wow for me.  Another reason I really wish I liked it is because of all the benefits and, hello! hardly any calories.

Sadly, I just couldn’t come to like the taste, so I sent all my unopened tubes to a lucky person on twitter.

Enter BibRave…as a BibRave Pro I have the opportunity to try out some really awesome products and run some super cool races.  One of these products is Nuun, oh and it’s pronounced like “noon.”

The package arrived at my door step, I wasn’t sure how to proceed. I received 4 tubes. I gave 2 of them to fellow Pro Heather…still hanging on to the other tubes.

So I did what anyone would do, I thought I would give it another try… I had one of my open tubes still in the pantry and it had not expired, these things have great shelf life.

I went through the process of watching it dissolve…

I know you were hoping for a happy ending, well I still do not care for this after I retried it. There is just something I can’t place, I still think it’s the fizz, I really want it to be carbonated, mainly because I do not drink soda. I guess bottom line, it’s not for me….

Through this process, I was also given a sample tab through a StrideBox subscription. At the time I wish I had the option to buy a sample tab package, it looks like you can buy singles on the website now.

HOWEVER…Last night I asked my husband if I can have a drink of his water, he tells me “this isn’t water, it’s Nuun.” Guess I found a home for my Nuun…it’s definitely something you need to at least try.

Still looking for information, I apparently am the only one who does not care for Nuun, check out the following Pro’s blogs:
